NENA achieves $10K match for Harrison Hollow Purchase!

Please join us tonight, September 16, at the Hyde Park Street Fair Main Stage, where NENA will be presenting the Land Trust of the Treasure Valley with its $10,000 matching donation for Harrison Hollow. Since April of this year, residents of the North End have been pledging their support for the preservation of  ”One of the last best places,” 580 acres of natural area off of Bogus Basin Road. We will make the presentation at 8pm.

It’s an area long enjoyed by North End residents for biking, hiking, running, and natural beauty. In April, the North End Neighborhood Association’s Board of Directors approved a $10,000 matching fund, a dollar for dollar match to any donation by a North End resident. In August, The Land Trust of the Treasure Valley reached this match through a combination of individual donations, block parties, and house parties held by North End neighbors.

We at NENA are overjoyed to have the means to support such an incredible cause, and to preserve an important element of our local quality of life. We are able to do this because of funds raised at the Hyde Park Street Fair, Boise’s oldest neighborhood celebration. We look forward to seeing you at the fair!

Hollywood Market Estate Sale

Hi Neighbors! We just received the following from the folks in charge of the Hollywood Market Estate Sale this weekend. Please join and keep a part of The North End’s history.

Dear Friends and Customers!

Our estate sale this weekend has is steeped in Boise history! We are helping to sell the contents of the storied Hollywood Market, founded in the early 1900s and owned and operated for many decades by the late Margaret Lawrence. The trustees of her estate have asked us to conduct a sale of the many unique and interesting items in the store, plus some assorted collectibles brought from Ms. Lawrence’s home.

Margaret Lawrence was a beloved neighborhood icon, plus a well known Boise activist, spearheading the movement to recall former Boise Mayor Brent Coles and campaigning for other causes. You’ll find many wonderful collectibles and memorabilia used or displayed in the Market, including signs, neon lights, books and records, cabinets, shelving, coolers, pictures, posters, china, glassware, figurines, bronze items, colored glass, typewriters, notions and sundries. We hope all of the Hollywood Market’s many friends and customers will stop by the sale and take home something of Margaret’s.

Sale hours are 9-5 Saturday and 11-5 on Sunday. The Hollywood Market is located at 1319 N. 8th St. in Boise’s North End (corner of 8th and Ressegue). We will pass out numbers to hold places in line starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday. A limited number of people will be allowed in the store at one time. There will be no previews or earlies.

The pictures that follow show some of the many items for sale this weekend! We hope to see you there! Please email with questions; however, we have no knowledge of what might happen to the building after the sale.

August 6 at Camel’s Back Park – Movie for a Cause

On August 6, join your neighbors in Camel’s Back Park for the North End’s first Movie for a Cause! At 9:30 pm the lights will (naturally) dim and Harrison Ford’s adventure classic “Raiders of the Lost Ark” will light up the portable big screen. This event is supported by The City of Boise, Boise City Police and Holland & Hart, LLP and will benefit the Idaho Special Olympics. Parilla Grill and The Lion’s Club will have food and soft drinks available, or feel free to bring your own picnic. Please note that this is an alcohol free event.

So bring your blankets, low-backed chairs, families and friends to this neighborhood movie. Parking around Camel’s Back is extremely limited, so please leave your car at home. Also consider sharing your home parking with friends from other neighborhoods as to minimize impacts on folks around Camel’s Back. Disabled parking will be available in the parking lot on 13th & Heron.

We hope to see you there!

Hyde Park Street Fair 2011

Please mark your calendars for NENA’s Annual Hyde Park Street Fair, September 16-18 at Camel’s Back Park! As in years past, we’ll feature great entertainment, a children’s play area, tasty local food, unique retailers and a variety of area organizations.

Food and vendor booths have already been selected for this year’s fair, but please keep Hyde Park Street Fair in mind for your 2012 planning! All applications will be due June 1, 2012 and will be available on our website.

We will miss you, Margaret!

As many of you have heard, North End legend Margaret Lawrence, owner of the iconic Hollywood Market, passed away on Wednesday. She was 95 years old.

Margaret had owned the Hollywood Market for over 40 years. Many of us remember buying candy from her as children, and beer as adults. We grew up shopping at her happy little market, and always enjoyed chatting with her about current events, politics, the neighborhood, and about the changes she’d seen in Boise over the years. Margaret had a colorful past that was always connected to the pulse of the city. She also had an infectious optimism and love of others’ happiness. These were all the things that encouraged loyalty to her market.

Margaret was a true Boisean and North Ender and will be greatly missed.

We will update on Margaret’s memorial services as more information becomes available.
